Drainage

Drainage works have the purpose of draining water, through tubes, channels and ditches, with the help of pumps and motors. Drainage systems can be built in rural, urban or industrial areas, aiming to channel rainwater, prevent floods and increase safety in the activities.

Urban drainage, often treated as a complementary service, was restricted to networks and rainwater collectors, without the necessary articulation with the urban dynamics of land use and occupation. Of all the components of the sanitation sector, urban rainwater drainage and management services are the ones with the greatest lack of standards and organization. The accelerated and chaotic urbanization, with a lack of discipline in land use and occupation, coupled with the lack of investments in rainwater drainage, resulted in an increase of the floods in urban centers.
